Apple Health data portability, without the bullshit.

A practical checklist for exporting, backing up, and reviewing your Apple Health data before a doctor visit, device reset, platform switch, or self-hosted archive.

In short: health data portability means being able to take your Apple Health records out of the Health app in a useful form. HealthSave turns selected Apple Health metrics into CSV for spreadsheets, JSON for developers and APIs, or a PDF report for a doctor, without creating a HealthSave account or uploading your data to a HealthSave cloud.

When you actually need a portable export

Before a doctor visit

Bring a date-ranged PDF instead of scrolling through the Health app in the exam room. Keep it narrow: the metrics and dates relevant to the visit.

Before wiping or replacing a phone

Export a copy of key metrics before a reset, repair, or migration so you are not relying on one device state.

For spreadsheet analysis

Use CSV when you want Excel, Numbers, Google Sheets, pivot tables, charts, or simple personal analysis.

For your own server

Use JSON, REST, or a self-hosted database path when you want your own archive, dashboard, or automation pipeline.

The checklist

  1. Pick the job first. Spreadsheet, PDF, JSON, or self-hosted sync are different jobs. Do not export everything just because you can.
  2. Choose only useful metrics. Heart rate, sleep, steps, HRV, workouts, weight, SpO2, ECG history, respiratory rate, VO2 max, and medications all have different audiences.
  3. Choose a date range. A doctor visit usually needs a focused range. A personal archive may need months or years.
  4. Export to the right format. CSV for spreadsheets, JSON for developers and APIs, PDF for a readable report.
  5. Store it somewhere you control. Files, encrypted backups, your own database, or your own server. HealthSave does not host your health data for you.
  6. Keep the medical boundary clear. Exported Apple Health data can help you prepare, but it is not a diagnosis, treatment plan, or medical device output.

Privacy and medical boundary

HealthSave reads Apple Health data on your iPhone with your permission. There is no HealthSave cloud account holding your data. Your data leaves the phone only when you export or sync to a destination you choose. HealthSave is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, or provide medical advice.
