Apple Watch data gaps: why your health export has missing hours
A troubleshooting guide for Apple Health export gaps, missing samples, duplicate devices, watch charging windows, permissions, and sync delays.
Pain point: the chart looks broken
Missing hours do not always mean your export failed. Wearables produce uneven data: charging gaps, permissions, device swaps, low-power mode, app sync timing, and category-specific sampling rules all create holes.
Checks before blaming the export
- Was the watch worn during that window?
- Was the relevant Health permission enabled?
- Did the metric actually sample continuously, or only during workouts/sleep?
- Are multiple devices writing the same category?
- Did you export before HealthKit finished syncing?
How to make gaps visible
Keep a missing-data table next to every trend. For each category, track expected frequency, actual sample count, and last sample timestamp. A dashboard without gap checks can make stale data look like a real trend.
Boundary
HealthSave can export what HealthKit has permission to read. It cannot recover data your watch never recorded or HealthKit never stored.
