What Heart Rate Data Can You Export?
Apple Health stores several types of heart rate data from your wearable:
- Heart Rate — continuous readings throughout the day (typically every 5-10 minutes, more frequent during workouts)
- Resting Heart Rate — your daily resting heart rate, measured when you're still and calm
- Heart Rate Variability (HRV) — the variation in time between heartbeats, measured in milliseconds (SDNN). A key indicator of recovery and autonomic nervous system health
- Walking Heart Rate Average — your average heart rate during walks
- Heart Rate Recovery — how quickly your heart rate drops after exercise
All of these can be exported to CSV, JSON, or PDF using HealthSave.
Step-by-Step: Export Heart Rate Data
1. Download HealthSave
Get HealthSave from the App Store — it's free. No account or sign-up needed.
2. Grant Heart Rate Access
When you open HealthSave for the first time, it asks for Apple Health permissions. Make sure you enable Heart Rate, Resting Heart Rate, and Heart Rate Variability at minimum. You can also enable other metrics like SpO2 and respiratory rate.
3. View Your Heart Rate Dashboard
Your latest heart rate data appears on the HealthSave dashboard immediately. You'll see your current heart rate, today's resting heart rate, and your most recent HRV reading. With Pro, you can track 7/30/90-day trends to see how your heart health changes over time.
4. Export to CSV, JSON, or PDF
Go to the Export tab in HealthSave:
- Select the heart rate metrics you want to export
- Choose your date range (last 7 days is free; unlimited with Pro)
- Pick your format:
- CSV — opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers. Best for data analysis.
- JSON — structured data for developers, APIs, or custom tools.
- PDF — formatted report you can share with your doctor. (Pro feature)
- Tap Export and share via Files, Mail, AirDrop, or any app
What Does Exported Heart Rate Data Look Like?
A CSV export of heart rate data includes columns for the timestamp, heart rate value (BPM), and source device. For example:
timestamp, heart_rate_bpm, source
2026-03-23 08:15:00, 72, Apple Watch
2026-03-23 08:20:00, 68, Apple Watch
2026-03-23 08:25:00, 75, Apple Watch
HRV data includes the SDNN value in milliseconds. Resting heart rate provides one daily value.
Why Export Heart Rate Data?
- Share with your doctor — PDF reports let you show heart rate patterns during appointments. Useful for discussing palpitations, bradycardia, or exercise recovery.
- Track fitness progress — resting heart rate trends over months show cardiovascular fitness improvements from training.
- Monitor HRV for recovery — athletes and biohackers use HRV trends to decide training intensity. Exporting to a spreadsheet lets you run your own analysis.
- Personal research — correlate heart rate with sleep, stress, diet, or medication changes in your own spreadsheet.
Which Wearables Record Heart Rate?
Any wearable that syncs heart rate data to Apple Health works with HealthSave:
- Apple Watch — all series. Continuous HR, resting HR, HRV, walking HR, recovery HR.
- Whoop — HR, HRV, recovery score synced via Whoop app.
- Garmin — HR synced via Garmin Connect to Apple Health.
- Fitbit — HR and resting HR synced via Fitbit app.
- Samsung, Amazfit, Huawei — HR data synced via their companion apps.
